The partnership between the Centre de santé du Pontiac and the Caisse Populaire Desjardins de Fort-Coulonge has enabled us to develop an action plan whose objective is to raise awareness amongst the general public of the Pontiac region and to prevent the difficulties associated with problem and pathological gambling.

The action plan covers 4 aspects: Promotion, prevention, direction and concertation.

Promotion

- Aimed at the general public, to increase awareness, education and information.
- Methods to be used: production of pamphlets, placemats, short questionnaires, etc., press conferences and advertising in the media.

Prevention

- Aimed at vulnerable persons or those presenting risk factors, to make them more aware of the risks and consequences associated with gambling.
- Methods to be used:
. Presentations to groups (schools, businesses, community groups,
associations, social clubs …)
. Training given to target groups (workers from the health and social services network and community organizations, Caisse and bank employees, employees of bars and restaurants) covering 3 specific themes:
. Identification: how to recognize a player who may potentially become a problem or
pathological gambler
. Approach: how to broach the subject with this person
. Referral: how to suggest a meeting with a resource that could
intervene and help.

Direction

- Aimed at gamblers in difficulty and their families, with a view to treatment, problem resolution and protection of the persons affected.
- Methods to be used:
. Listing of available resources
. Distribution of information to key players (persons who have been trained, physicians,
receptionists…)
. Learning to direct persons to resources.

Concertation

- Aimed at consultation and collaboration between the organizations in the community preoccupied by this issue, for the purpose of sharing information.
- Method to be used: already existing concertation tables, with enlarged membership when necessary.

Responsibility for the development and implementation of the action plan lies with the Adult and Mental Health Services of the Centre de santé du Pontiac.

Implementation is expected before the summer of 2005, and will be completed (fully operational) in the fall of 2005.
